The following data has been transcribed from the parish death register held at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. At the time of writing (Feb 2013) it is believed that this register has not been previously transcribed or published.
Whereas only a fraction of Irish burials in the early 20th century were recorded on headstones, this register includes details of all Catholic deaths in the parish from 1918 onwards, along with the name of the graveyard used. In the absence of other surviving burial records, it serves as a useful alternative for Ballycastle's three main Catholic burial grounds: Doonfeeny, Kilbride, and Ballycastle (aka "The New Cemetery"). The first recorded burials for Ballycastle are in 1939. Some burials in other nearby cemeteries are also listed.
This register includes valuable genealogical data such as the full names of the deceased's spouse or parents, often with maiden names. Such information is not available from the census records, Griffith's Valuation, or Tithes, etc. Unusual causes of death such as accidents or murder, are also occasionally noted.
This register starts in 1918 and the transcript includes the key genealogical information (where available), but the name of the priest performing the Sacraments and any sensitive comments have been omitted. Some of the handwriting appears to be spelled phonetically or is difficult to read and so may not be accurately transcribed. The quoted ages are usually estimates, as oftentimes even the deceased did not know their own true age.
